In its ongoing efforts to impact the community through enhanced food security and environmental conservation, the Botswana Trade Commission (BOTC) today launched a Community Support Initiative at Manyana Primary School. This initiative aligns with the Government’s priority area on social development.

In her speaking notes to highlight the objective of the project, BOTC Chief Executive Officer Ms. Shirley Moncho said as part of the Commission’s Corporate Responsibility initiatives Manyana Primary School was identified to support the Special Needs Class within the school through farming and an orchard. She said that the initiative was put in place to promote food security by establishing a suitable poultry (layers) farming project. By adopting this initiative they aimed at enhancing environmental conservation through fruit tree planting so as to impart skills to students on sustainable agriculture and responsible environmental practices.
Ms. Moncho stated that they saw it fit to align with the government’s mandate of perceiving democracy, unity, development, self-reliance and Botho as the foundation that has built the nation of Botswana. β€œTherefore the commission’s initiative is intended to give young children practical skills to better their future”, she said.

In closing Ms. Moncho highlighted that the project ensures long-term sustainability of the project through revenue generation from eggs and fruit sales. The commission aims at instilling entrepreneurship and income generation at grass root level as well as a sense of responsibility, teamwork and hands on learning for the betterment of the learner’s future. The commission presented a total of 96 chicken layers, 15 trees, chicken feeds and manure to the school.
BOTC staff donated stationery to the special needs class to honour the giving back to school theme. This support is to foster improved education by contributing to the foundations of education.
